MAAFUSHI, MALDIVES: THIS HERO was praised by the internet after freeing a family of turtles that were trapped in a lethal 36 foot long ghost net that had been lost or abandoned by photographer caught amazing footage of himself freeing two 100-pound adult and two 35-pound juvenile Olive Ridley turtles, which are classified as, ?vulnerable? with up-to 800,000 left in the wild. Images and video captured the 36-foot long tangled web of nets engulfing the turtles. Freediver and Underwater Photographer Ibrahim Shafeeg (37) from the Maldives was able to cut open a ghost net and set a family of Olive Ridley turtles free into the South East Lagoon off Maafushi. Ibrahim had gotten information from a local that there may have been turtles caught in a ghost net along the shallow shore of the ocean, and so he made his way out to try and find them and hopefully free them. A ghost net is a fishing net that has been abandoned or lost in the ocean, which in this case had drifted close to the shore and had caught four turtles among waste found in the ocean. When Ibrahim got to the scene, he discovered that two adult turtles and two juvenile turtles were caught and trapped among the large net that was around 36-feet in length. At the time, Ibrahim was livestreaming the event on his Instagram @the_sharkguy and had gained a multitude of interest from his followers and friends about the situation. After letting his followers know the situation at hand and where he was, one of his local friends made their way there to help him free the turtles. Together with his friend, Hussain Aiman (32) Ibrahim cut and chopped at the net with his knife, slowly freeing the tangled and confused turtles from the net. Once Ibrahim had set each turtle free from the grasp of the net, he inspected the turtles for signs of damage from their ordeal, which thankfully seemed to leave them unharmed.
