Charterhouse of Escaladei of the Priorat region in the province of Tarragona,Catalonia,Spain
First monastery of the order of Sant Bru established in the Iberian Peninsula. Today you can walk through the enclosure and contemplate the remains of the church and the main cloister, as well as one of the closing cells, recently rebuilt. Located in a closed valley at the foot of the Serra del Montsant, the Cartoixa de Santa Maria d'Escaladei was the first monastery of the order of Sant Bru established in the entire Iberian Peninsula. It is possible to walk through the Cartoixa enclosure and contemplate the architecture of the facades, arches, pavements and walls. The remains of the church and the main cloister stand out, as well as one of the closing cells, recently rebuilt and arranged as it was when a Carthusian father lived there. The last major intervention was carried out in 2013 when some of the most damaged spaces in the complex were cleaned and renovated, such as the central area and the smaller cloister. This restoration allows the visitor to access areas of the building that previously could only be seen from the outside.
