Most of thespecimens met with were from three tofive pounds in weight, a size evidentlymatured, as many females were loadedwith spawn. January is, no doubt, thespawning season, as a great many arethen taken in small inlets and themouths of rivers, evidently intent onspawning. Some females, dissected,contained from fifty-four to sixty-eightmatured eggs. These eggs were ar-ranged on each side and much re-sembled bunches of grapes when takeninto the hand. In two specimens
