Salivary duct stone treatment. Doctor using a laser scalpel to treat a patient with salivary duct stones. The laser scalpel uses infrared light, transmitted by a special optical fibre, to break-down the stones. This procedure is much less invasive than surgical removal of the stones, which is the current treatment. The stones are caused by chemicals in the saliva crystallising. The laser scalpel is being developed by CHG Southampton Ltd.
