Miss. on the 14 ? of May. we staid there at work for 2 days and nights ? and then started double quick for vickburg[Vicksburg], drove in the enemies outposts on the evening of the 18 ? and kept skirmishing with them most of the night and drove them into their strong hold the morning of the 19H and commenced preparing to storm their works the 4 Iowa and 26 Iowa made the Atempt to charge their works the evening of the 19,H but more repulsed, on the 22 the grand charge was made and we were continued on page 181 118 page 118 repulsed again and then commenced the work of a Siege, which is very hard on men the siege Lasted forty Seven days. when the Rebs on the 4 day of July came out and stacked their arms. and piled their colors on top. they was are a mean Looking Let taking them as a crowd. but I suppose they had a rest while the waited to tire us out, we started on the same night at midnight after Johnson and made him tot[?] to Jackson where he was fortified very strong we worked ovr him 8 days and then he Left there in the night and we was mortar[?] of the capital; again; we Rested 12 hours and my division started in persuit of him and got as far as Brandon and formd a heavy cavalry force Ready to Recive us. we pitched into them and that night we stayed in Brandon, next day we tore up the Railroad and S
