His first notable ex-ploit was the destruction of the Phila-delphia in the harbor of Tripoli, in thePreble Expedition, for which Congressgave him thanks, a sword, and promotion The Philadelphia had chased a Tripolitanship into the harbor in front of that town,and struck upon a rock not laid down onthe charts. Fast bound, she was capturedby the Tripolitans, and Captain Bain-bridge and his officers were madeprisoners of war, and the crewwere made slaves. Decatur caught a Tripolitanketch laden with maidens, whomthe Bashaw was sending to theSultan at Constantinople as apresent. The captured ketch was takeninto the United States service andrenamed the Intrepid. In herDecatur and seventy - four braveyoung men sailed for Tripoli, ac-companied by the Biren, underLieutenant (afterwards Commo-dore ) Stewart. On a bright moonlit eveningthey sailed boldly into the harbor,warped alongside the Philadelphia,sprang on board, and after a fiercestruggle all the Tripolit
