The earth trembled beneath my feet, andthe buildings around seemed to be rushinginto a mass of ruins. On every side, I couldhear the crash of buildings falling to theearth; the screams of men, women, andchildren, filled with despair or crushed be-neath the falling fragments; together witha heavy and portentous sound, like thedeep bellowing of thunder smothered in thebowels of the earth. At lengthI reached the Pla^a Mayor, where I hadan extended view of the scene. The whole space was nearly covered withpeople; priests with their crosses; womenwith their children; aged men and women,tottering with years; the rich and the poor,the strong and the weak, the young and theold; some silent and some wailing; someprostrate on the earth ; others kneeling andtelling their beads; others standing erect,and spreading upward their beseeching handsto Heaven. While such was the spectaclebefore the eye, the ear was stunned withstrange and appalling sounds, and, at thesame time, the earth trembled as if thevery stones were filled with fear at theawful visitation.
