The Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, is a Roman monument located in the right border of the Tiber River, opposite the Sant'Angelo Bridge, a short distance from the Vatican City. Started by Emperor Hadrian in 135 to be his personal and family mausoleum was completed by Antoninus Pius in 139. The monument, built of travertine stone, was adorned by bronze chariot driven by Emperor Hadrian. The building use changed and became a military building. Was integrated into the Aurelian Walls in 403.
