Holiday receptions, funerals and a few weddings gave the florists about an even break with the market last week. There has been a moderate sup- ply, and the demand has given the tradesmen an opportunity to keep prac- tically cleaned up all the week. Prices have been normal, having dropped back after the Christmas rise. The coming week will be a busy one on account of the numerous orders that have been received for the inaugurations of city and state officials. Various Notes. William Jurgens, of Newport, was a visitor in Boston last week. The florists in this section are watch- ing, with considerable interest, the workings of the new parcel post. One florist took advantage of the new order of things, on the first day, to send a funeral wreath to Hanover, N. H. The piece was just one-half inch inside the measurement allowed by law, and cost 18 cents to mail, while the express charge would have been 55 cents. As a Christmas gift, the city of New- port has been offered the entire estate of George Gordon King, to be used as a public park and the dwelling as a library. The grounds, containing about eight acres, are well furnished with shrubs and large, handsome trees. J. Kopelman & Co. have begun the erection of two propagating houses on their place at Oaklawn. Each will be 20x60. George Hunt has been reelected Fire Commissioner of Providence, for a pe- riod of three years. Louis D.
