This Lowland Gorilla is part of the largest gorillarium in the world and is seen here eating in the afternoon sun.
Both Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal parks were set up by the late John Aspinall. John Aspinall purchased Port Lympne back in 1957, with Howletts being bought in 1973 not only to house the growing collection of animals but to protect and breed rare and endangered species and, where possible, return them to safe areas in the wild. The charity that works in conjunction with Port Lympne and Howletts Wild Animal Parks, the Aspinall Foundation also manages two gorilla rescue and rehabilitation projects in the central African countries of Gabon and Congo where we have been able to successfully reintroduce over 50 gorillas to the wild.
