Fan Brycheiniog from Picws Du

Picws Du is the highest peak of the Carmarthen Fans or Bannau Sir Gaer in the Carmarthenshire section of the Black Mountain in the west of the Brecon Beacons National Park in south Wales. It is a subsidiary summit of Fan Brycheiniog. It is within Fforest Fawr Geopark. Its prominent summit is marked by an ancient cairn at a height of 749m above sea level. Waun Lefrith is the other, lower summit of the Bannau Sir Gaer / Carmarthen Fans. Picws Du is formed from the sandstones and mudstones of the Brownstones Formation of the Old Red Sandstone laid down during the Devonian period. Its summit and southern slopes are formed from the hard-wearing sandstones of the overlying Plateau Beds Formation which are of upper/late Devonian age. The northwestern and northeast faces of Picws Du were home to small glaciers during the ice ages which gouged out the cwms of Pwll yr Henllyn and Pant y Bwlch. These cwms drain via the Afon Sawdde into the River Towy. The southern slopes drain into the Afon Twrch and so into the River Tawe Llyn y Fan Fach (Welsh meaning Lake of the small beacon-hill) is a dammed lake in the western border of the Black Mountain (Brecon Beacons National Park) in Carmarthenshire, south Wales. Near to it is found Llyn y Fan Fawr. Llyn y Fan Fawr (Welsh: 'lake of the big peak') is a natural lake in the county of Powys, Wales. It lies at the foot of Fan Brycheiniog, the highest peak of the Black Mountain range within the Brecon Beacons National Park. The lake is enclosed within a rock hollow formed as a result of glacial action during the ice ages. It is drained by a stream known as Nant y Llyn (Welsh: 'stream of the lake'), whose waters flow into the River Tawe. The surface of Llyn y Fan Fawr lies at about 605 m above sea level. Llyn y Fan Fach (Welsh: 'lake of the small peak') which lies about 2 miles (or 3 km) to the west is of similar origin and size but was dammed in the 1930s.
