Flower pod emerging from Musa rajapuri in an English greenhouse.
At a minimum temperature of 12C (54F), a Musa Rajapuri banana sends out a healthy-looking flower bud in an English greenhouse in the depths of winter. These potted bananas will remain over-wintering under glass until late May/early June when they will be dragged outdoors to a suitable warm, sunny, sheltered site. As this specimen is 'pregnant' it will be well fed with a phosphorus and potassium fertiliser (tomato fertiliser) until it gives birth to (hopefully) a few bunches of edible bananas in 2018. I live in hope!
