The novitiation ceremony in Theravada Buddhism marks a girl's ordination. The costume is the style of ancient Burmese royalty.

Allowing a girl to spend some time, however short it may be, in a Buddhist nunnery is regarded by some Buddhists as the best religious gift that his parents can give her and it is believed to have a lasting effect on her life.
