Emil Post (1897-1954), American mathematician. Post is best known for his work in the field of recursion, or computability, theory, which laid the foundations for modern computing theory. Independently of Turing he developed instructions for a machine that had much in common with Turing's universal computing machine. He showed that all the instructions for the machine could be reduced to sets of two symbols, 0 and 1. Photographed in June 1924.
