Woden Law Hill Fort nr Hownam Scottish Borders Scotland
View North East to Cheviots. Woden Law hill fort commands an impressive position at 423m high on the escarpment overlooking the Kale Water valley and standing above an important route across the Cheviot Hills. It seems there was a simple settlement here surrounded by a single oval stone dyke to which was added a later double rampart and intervening ditch. It then appears that the Romans took control of the site which overlooked their road later known as Dere Street over the Cheviot Hills. They may have used the site for training, building a siegeworks consisting of an earthwork of two banks some 12m to 30m from the hill fort defences with several flattened platforms that may have been used for siege engines. The site was probably re occupied when the Romans withdrew.
