George Sand, French novelist and early feminist, c1845-1876. Portrait of Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin whose pen-name was George Sand (1804-1876). Married at 18, after nine years she left her husband Baron Dudevant and went to Paris with their two children. A member of the Bohemian artistic circle, Sand took a number of lovers including Jules Sandeau, Prosper Merimee, Lamenais and Pierre Leroux. Her most famous relationship was that with Chopin which lasted 10 years. From 1848 she lived at Nohant in Berri, France, a property she inherited from her grandmother.
