Kempt Tower, St Ouens Bay, Jersey, Channel Islands

One of the most imposing fortifications to be seen along Jersey's Five Mile Road in St Ouen's Bay is Kempt Tower, the sole surviving Martello Tower on the Island. It was built in 1834 (its date stone can be seen above the door,) from Jersey granite as a defence against French invasion and named after Sir James Kempt, one of Wellington's Generals at the Battle of Waterloo. Kempt Tower became the Visitor Centre for the Les Mielles conservation area in July 1985.
