Tornado (lower left) forming over fields. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). Large tornadoes, which form from severe thunderstorms called supercells (the large white cloud seen here), can be hundreds of metres across and travel many kilometres before dissipating.
