Monas Hieroglyphica (1564), title page. This work consists of 24 theorems by Welsh astrologer John Dee (1527-1608). Written in a mystical state, it revealed esoteric secrets in astronomy, alchemy, music, mathematics, linguistics, mechanics, and optics. This title page includes Dee's glyph (centre, see C015/4316), the Sun and Moon, and the four elements in the corners (fire, air, earth and water). The Latin text gives the title, the author's name and location (London), a dedication to his patron the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, and various mottoes. At bottom is a biblical quote from Genesis, plus publishing details.
