From 1861-67 he served as town clerk; in 1866he was one of the selectmen of the town, and in 1876was elected a member of the legislature; in 1888 hewas one of the Massachusetts delegates to the nation-al republican convention at Chicago, which nominat-ed President Harrison. He is a prominent memberand one of the founders of Orange lodge, organizedin 1859, was its first secretary, and afterward itstreasurer; he was also a charter member and the firsttreasurer of Crescent R. A. chapter, organized in1884. Mr. Wheeler was married in Orange Oct. 9,1856, by Rev. Hosea Ballou, to Almira E., daughterof Daniel and Almira (Porter) Johnson.
