Average volumes decreased from west () to east'(). Cope- pods and cladocerans were the dominant zoo- plankters (89% of total). Of 14 copepodspe- cies in the samples, 4 dominated the catches-- Centropages typicus (74% of the total), Oithona similis (9%), Calanus finmarchicus (6%), and Temora longicornis (3%). Dense patches of phytoplankton were encountered all along coast. Two dinoflagellate species, Ceratium longipes and C. fusus, occurred most fre- quently in samples and apparently were phyto- plankters producing the autumn bloom en- countered. The samples had 1,442 larval fishes, 1,393 of them herring--ranging from mm to mm; average length was mm. Surface temperatures were seasonally normal, ranging from ° C to ° C. As in previous autumns, vertical mixing of wa- ter column increased from west to east. "RORQUAL" ESTIMATES ABUNDANCE OF LARVAL HERRING The purpose of the Rorqual cruise of Oc- tober 17-27, 1966 (Cruise 8-66) was to es- timate the abundance and vertical distribu- tion of larval herring and their association with water types.
