In 1880, the L^niversity finances were at a very low ebb. Colonel Lewisgenerously came forward at the critical time and consented to assume thefinancial control of the Institution and guaranteed all expenses. His generousoffer was joyfully accepted by the trustees and in recognition of what he to do, they changed the name of the University to Le-^\-is College. Hewas made president of the University, December 21, 1880, and held this officeuntil June 30, 1892. There isno question but what the University would have been obliged to close its doors,if it had not been for Colonel Lewis assistance. Colonel Lewis and his ad-visors made many improvements in the University curriculum. They greatlystrengthened the course of Instruction. In 1883, Colonel Lewis began to meetwith business losses, and was unable to defray the expenses of the 1884, by action of the State Legislature, the name of the Institution waschanged back to Norwich University. He married Orianna Pendleton of BeKast, Me. Of this marriage fourchildren are now living: Lenora, wife of Dr. James Jackson of Boston; DexterWadleigh, N. U., 90; Kenneth Hastings, N.
