He was rapidlypromoted and was honorably discharged when he was Lieu-tenant Colonel. He contracted troubles in the army, whichcompelled him to have several surgical operations, from whichhe never recovered. After his discharge from the army, hewas Clerk of the Legislature of the state of Indiana ; andsubsequently, first assistant physician for the Hospital forthe Insane at Indianapolis, Ind., for fifteen years, and thentransferred to the same position to the Hospital for Insaneat Anna, 111., for ten years; then removed to Chicago,
