The British trenches were not added in case the maps fell into enemy hands. The Battle of the Somme was a battle of the First World War, fought by the British and French against the German army. It took place between 1st July and 18th November 1916 on both sides of the River Somme, France. This particular map was prepared for the 1st July offensive, for the section or platoon commanders in 30th Division battalions on the extreme right of the British attack.
