THIS Earl of Angus, guid Archbald, as he is affectionately called by oneof his contemporaries,! ^as born about the year 1555, and succeededhis father, the seventh Earl, when about two years old. His uncle, JamesEarl of Morton, as narrated in the preceding memoir, at once took charge ofhis interests as tutor, and seems to the best of his ability to have promotedthe welfare of his ward. The claims of the young Earl to succeed to thetitle and estates of Angus were opposed at first by a powerful personage. LadyMargaret Douglas, Countess of Lennox, only daughter of the sixth Earl ofAngus, and his heir of line. On her fathers death she assumed the title ofAngus in addition to that of Lennox, and made strenuous efforts to obtainlegll possession of her fathers
