The Scheldt River is the artery of the bustling harbor, which, until the straightening of the quays in 1803 and 1877, which was still pretty close to the center and under this bridge. The riverbank and also a part of the old town full of ramshackle houses were demolished. Today only the northbound look of Minerva connects the city with the port. This Minerva by Marcello Mascherini, is the goddess of wisdom and arts. Minerva was the Roman goddess of wisdom and sponsor of arts, trade, and defense. She was born from the godhead of Jupiter with weapons. From the 2nd century BC onwards, the Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of music, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, and magic. She is often depicted with her sacred creature, an owl usually named as the "owl of Minerva", which symbolizes that she is connected to wisdom.
