UNITED STATES - June 5: Today the French frigate Hermione sailed into Yorktown Virginia. The Hermione, also called the Frigate of Freedom, delivered the young Marquis de Lafayette in1780 to General Washington with full French aid. The replica will be in Yorktown June 5th to June 7th before she heads up the East Coast touring key ports along the way. Twenty years ago a small group of visionaries met, under the leadership of RochefortÕs then Mayor Jean-Louis Frot, and imagined reconstructing an exact replica of the Hermione, the French frigate that carried the young Lafayette to General Washington, pledging full French support for AmericaÕs cause. With a unanimous vote of the municipal council and the creation of the Association Hermione-La Fayette, work began. For them, LafayetteÕs role of securing French money, men and arms and sailing to meet General Washington to aid AmericaÕs cause was an often forgotten piece of our collective memory and an invaluable part of history too important to be lost. The project defied all odds, but was completed thanks to the growing support of admirers and with help from the French government. (Photo By Douglas Graham/WLP)
