Transcription: up Broadway to Union Square, after dinner, in the course of which perambulation I passed Jim [Parton] and Old Party [Fanny Fern], who noticed me, though Jim didn't. The lines parenthesizing her mouth have deepened considerably of late, she looks old and vicious. To Century, Pic Offices &c &c, returning uptown by 6. Met Mrs Patten, too, before the other encounter. She had seen an announcement of Mrs [Mary] Levison's return from Europe in the papers. [Phonography] in the evening, which I have been obliged to drop for a week or so. 23. Thursday. Did four Pic. drawings on wood. [Frank] Cahill up, this time to borrow 50 cents to get his dinner. Down town after nine, to Century and Pic Offices. Returned with [James] Morris (' Paper) looking in at Williams & Stevens' to see Church's and Gignoux' Niagaras. [Phonography] in the evening. Turned out at 10 1/2 for beer, called unsuccessfully for Cahill, found [Bob] Gun and Mc Pyke's. He wants me to edit as well as illustrate the Pic, including both for $15, which puts the former task at $5 weekly ? too little, by half. 24. Friday. By Pic block and dull day indoors till evening. Cahill came, with him to 16th St, where he left, saying, metaphorically, 'there was a woman who kept a big dog on the street which he was afraid of.' Found little [Thomas] Nast with [Jesse] Haney. The Edwards' in half an hour. Ed. Wells, [Carl] Knudsen Title: Thomas Butler Gunn Diaries: Volume 11, page 27, June 22-24, 1859 . 22 June 1859. Gunn, Thomas Butler, 1826-1903
