There is no doubt aboutthe desirability of planting sufficient orange trees about the homegrounds to produce fruit for domestic use. The question arises asto whether the amount of risk involved in planting large commercialorchards and bringing them into bearing is balanced by the likelihoodof profit. Experience in Imperial Valley as well as in the Coachella and SaltRiver Valleys has shown that the Navel orange growing in the dryair and bright sunshine of these localities has a distinct advantage inthat it sweetens earlier and has a deeper red color than when grownin other parts of California.
