Landscape of San Sebastián, 1912, Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) Sorolla found in ´the pearl of the Cantabrian´ the ideal place to escape and paint, while still enjoying a cool climate and a busy social life. For more than thirty years (1889 to 1921), the Valencian painter spent the summer intermittently in San Sebastián, almost always accompanied by his family. This renewed city opened to the world as the main spa city in Spain. And he captured San Sebastian in his paintings, through his luminous and vivid palette, and defined the visual ideology still linked to the city today. Joaquin Sorolla was captivated by San Sebastián and painted there often over more than thirty years. He captured the modern atmosphere of the city in his paintings, and his vibrant palette still serves as a defining visual identity for San Sebastián today.
