The river was not visible from the house becauseof the many trees. It could be reached either by followingthe tributary Rio Zapote through the potreros or by a roadthrough the cafetales which led to a place where an ironbridge had spanned the Reventazon. This bridge had beencarried away in one of the periodical floods the precedingwinter and as a consequence the carts carrying coffee wereobliged to go some distance upstream to the next bridge, greatly increasing the hauling. Fording with carts was im-possible, for the river is full of boulders here and the currentswift and strong. A temporary suspension bridge for one. u (^ p^
