His authority is more nominal than real,for he decides nothing but unimportantmatters, leaving more weighty subjects to acouncil of elders, who, as a rule, administerjustice with impartiality. Their laws arereally good and sensible, and, thoughlenient, are based on the principle of theold Jewish law, the eye for the eye and thetooth for the tooth. Marriages are managed in a very simplemanner, the bride and bridegroom sittingopposite each other, in front of an idol, andthe former giving the latter some betel-leafand tobacco. His acceptance of the pres-ent, and taking the hand of the giver, con-stitute the whole of the ceremony.
