Chenopodium leptophylliun (Moq.) Nutt. Festuca octoflora Walt. Plantago purshii R. & S. Draba micrantha Nutt. Dysodia papposa (^Vnt.) Hitchc The Festuca is the most important of these annuals. It is one of the most notice- able plants during wet periods in early spring. Often the landscape appears bright green largely because of the luxuriant growth of this small annual grass. It requires a very short season and will ripen in about thirt}" days. At its ripening period the appearance of the landscape is brown and dead. Plantago purshii is probably as uniformly distrib- uted but not usually so abundant as the Festuca. Tliere is great varia- tion from year to year in the amount of growth of tliese native annuals. They are es- l)ecially abundant and iioliceiil)l(' (lining w<'t yc;irs. All are <hminuiive, llie sniidler plsinlsof each species being more tli:m an inch in height, wliih^ the larger plants seldom reach a heiglil of more than (i inches. They are all shoi't-season |»lan(s and are able to ripen a 'iow s(M'ds even under most nnfavorahle condil ioi\s. The follow iiig longer lived plants are eomnioidv I'onnd in this short- grass cover:.
