During hiscollegiate course under the influence of President^\aylands thorough and simple Christian faithDr. .gell also announced his allegiance to thecause of Christianity, attaching himself after aIcing and thoughtful examination of denomina-tional peculiarities and claims to the Congrega-tional church. During the last year of his university coursehe became imbued with the desire of entering theChristian ministry—a purpose slowly formed and. i;. For a year foUowinif his graduation Dr. Angell^vas engaged in teaching and at the same time hisleisure hours were devoted to such privatestudies as awakened his keenest interest. In 1851he went abroad, spending the succeeding twoyears in study and travel in Europe and from hisforeign residence he was recalled to accept thechair of modern languages and literature University. This position he filled to thesatisfaction of all connected with the college untili860, when he resigned his professorship to enterthe field of journalism, becoming editor for Sen-ator Henry P. Anthony of his newspaper TheJournal. Dr. .gell remained in charge of thatpublication for six years and then resigned toaccept the presidency of the University of Aer-mont, with which he was connected until 1871,when he came to the Univ
