Prince Eugen’s Oak, Kunliga Djurgarden, Stockholm, Sweden. Djurgarden is an island close to the city centre of Stockholm, famed as the largest city park in the world, and notable for its ancient oak trees. Many of these are now hollow due to age, and have been subject to cosmetic surgery in the form of replacement “barkâ€Â\x9D. The picture shows one of the oldest trees in the park. Prince Eugen ( 1865-1947) was the youngest son of King Oscar II and an acclaimed artist whose former home, Waldemarsudde, is now the most visited art gallery in Sweden. The tree, which is hollow, has been ingeniously repaired. The central section at ground level is textured concrete. Above it, the central section consists of fragments of oak bark stitched to a wire frame. To a casual passer-by, the effect is remarkably naturalistic.
