Spirits of the Land Sponsored by RHS Silver medal winner Designed by Mariko Naka Built by Graduate Landscape Ltd Mariko’s design is inspired by her Japanese culture. She believes that Shinto spirits exist in natural environments and that they should be respected, not thoughtlessly destroyed. The design consists of a mat of rings with threads suspended from them. The rings are supported by two metre high tubes. Underneath the threads, an outcrop of rocks is set into flower-rich planting. The planting represents the continuity of living things and rock depicts the eternity of spirits. The threads signify the spirits of the wind. The hanging rings and the clear tubes, filled with sand from different areas to represent the joining of spirits, symbolise a sense of harmony.
