Broken leg. X-ray of a broken leg. The bones of the lower leg (the tibia and fibula) are visible here, and both have been broken. The break has left the bones with sharp ends (seen at lower left) which may puncture the skin. This type of break is known as a compound fracture. Fractures of the lower leg are fairly common, and may be caused by a hard, direct blow to the leg. If the bones are severely displaced, as here, surgery may be necessary to realign them before immobilising them in a cast. The bones usually heal within six to eight weeks.
