Francisco Bulto was a European motorcycle racer who co-founded Montessa just after WWII. Montessa was a popular motorcycle with European two-stroke racers from the start, and the bikes enjoyed many Grand Prix racing successes. Bulto resigned from Montessa and formed the Bultaco motorcycle company in 1958, after Montessa stopped making racing bikes. Bulto and several of Montessa's racing bike designers started building Bultaco's first bikes in Bulto's barn. Bultaco's legend can be traced back to its very first forays into racing in 1959. The first bikes it built, 125cc Tralla 101s, were entered in the 1959 Spanish Grand Prix, where they captured seven of the top ten finishes in their class. Successful enduro and trials models followed, including the Sherpa in 1960, the Sammy Miller-designed Sherpa T, which revolutionized motorcycle trials competition in 1965, and the Pursang off-road bike that was released the same year. Both the Sherpa T and Pursang were highly regarded in their respective classifications and their success in racing equated to excellent sales for Bultaco, especially here in the Flat track and enduro models soon followed. In 1971, Bultaco built the Alpina 250 with the trials and enduro rider in mind. It was designed as a successor to the earlier Sherpa T and used the same basic frame. Rated to a top speed of 72-75 MPH, the Alpina was not a quick bike, but the wheelbase, 11-inch ground clearance and 7-inch telescoping front fork travel made it ideal for off-road obstacle courses and rocky terrain. Powered by a two-stroke one-cylinder engine, the Alpina produced 20hp at 5,500 RPM. The engine had a 72mm bore and 60mm stroke, with 9:1 compression. A FEMSA flywheel magneto supplied ignition, and an Amal 627 carburetor dispensed the fuel. Top-end lubrication was an oil mist system, supplied by mixing two-stroke oil with the fuel at a 50:1 ratio in the tank.
