This is a section of the South Bank of the Arno known as Oltrarno across the river with the dome of Santo spirito in the background The south bank was once considered inferior with the less well off not being able to afford a palazzo within the city That was until the Medici family moved to Oltrarno in the 1550 s The piazza Pitti became the base of which the Tuscany region was ruled for the next three centuries
