Black tongue, also known as black hairy tongue, a condition where the filiform papillae, the threadlike projections covering the surface of the tongue, become enlarged & covered with the growth of the bacteria Cryptococcus linguae. A pigment is also released. The condition is curable with the use of nicotinic acid.
