Transcription: January the 11th De 1861[1862] Mound sitty[Mound City] Ill Dear friend I take this oppertunity to inform you that I am well at present and hope when this comes to hand it may find you the same there has been a great change taken plase since I writen to you last our regiment is split up and some gon Down the missippi[Mississippi] in the Direction of Columbus and some up the ohio in the Direction of camp burigard[Camp Beuregard] I am in the company that has gon up the river there was one of our companys sent up to the big mudy to gard a bridg the troops is all ordered out of cairo except a nough to gard the plase they ar all gon down the river there was one regiment of infantry in this plase but they left yesterday morning to Join the fleet that that went down the river the birds point[Bird ?s Point] boys has all left and gon out through missouri to cut of Jeff Thompson from Columbus it was rumerd in the camp at cairo the morning that wee left that there was 5 Dead and fiten wounded braught in to birds point[Bird ?s Point] and they tok tok forty men fron from our regiment for to cary Dispatches for them but wee was orderd out before they returnd so I cannot give you the hole his tory of what is going on yet but I think in a fiew days if wee stay here that wee will get the full details for our post boy is with them and I think that wee shall stay here for a while for there is no others soldiers here but our company and company L. and there us a big powder magacin[magazine] and one of the bigest hospitals that is in the state and there is no one to gard them if wee leave tho are mager[major] is looking for a Dispatch every minute for to move us on towards camp burigard[Camp Beuregard] I have not heard from fort holt to know which way they went but today is the Day that the great strugle is to take plase in columbus I think from the move they have made I heard that there was 15 thousand troops to come Down fro
