Oct. 3, 1803, ThomasHutchinson and others of the parish of Hevitoe, in thecounty of Devon, England, deeded, through their agent, tothe county of York, a tract of land containing two acres,in Alfred village, for a jail. In 1806 the log jail wascompleted ; cost, about 83000. In October, 1833, a committee of eight from differentparts of the county reported that a new stone jail wasneeded. Estimated cost, 86000.
