Palestine: Hussein al-Husayni (-1918), Palestinian mayor of Jerusalem () during the last years of Ottoman rule, c. 1910s. Hussein was born into the influential Jerusalemite Arab al-Husayni family, his father having previously served as mayor. Under his leadership, Jerusalem went through high development, with new roads paved, cleaner streets and the construction of a sewage network, partly financed by Jewish communities outside Palestine. He helped foster Muslim, Jewish and Christian cooperation. He died in January 1918, a couple of weeks after surrendering Jerusalem to the Allies.
