The barrel-vaulted ceiling of thesquare recesses between the loggiaproper and the vestibule, and thesoffit of the arch are richly panelledand decorated, but up to this pointall is uncoloured. The central bay is covered witha dome, semicircular in sectionthrough the pendentives, that isdiagonally across the bay. Thegreater part of the ornament is in highrelief, and colour is here introduced sparingly, but with greatskill. In the crown of the vault is a panel with the Mediciarms surmounted by a cardinals hat; and the variousbadges of the Medici family: the three feathers and thediamond ring, together with the palle of the Medici shield,. Decorationon the Piers. THE VILLA MADAMA NEAR ROME. 65 are frequently repeated among the decorations; only in asmall and unobtrusive position is the Papal tiara introducedin honour of Pope Leo X.
