Sometimes, of course, the first approach meets withcoldness, even with suspicion. Then Mr. Dreier simplyincreases his efforts to promote friendliness with theeditor. The opening wedge is generally not difficult tofind. Perhaps a recent book on the editors desk givesthe cue to a swapping of literary predilections*; perhapsthey both own the same make of automobile; perhapsthe editor has some office kink, the notice of whichwould bring joy to his heart. A subject of mutual in-. terest is usually quickly found, or a way in which theeditor can be served. The almost certain friendliness, once established, isnot allowed to lapse. When Mr. Dreier returns to hisoffice he writes a sincere letter thanking the editor forthe courtesy and the co-operation shown.
