Jan Becan (1518-1572), Dutch physician and linguist, with a skull and a metal ring. Born Jan Gerartsen in the town of Gorp, he was also known by his Latinised name Johannes Goropius Becanus (Latin version shown across top). Becan was the town doctor of Antwerp, where he devoted himself to the study of the languages and cultures of antiquity. His works include 'Origines Antwerpianae' (1569), an account of the antiquities of Antwerp. Although considered a founder of the field of historical linguistics, Becan's linguistic work was heavily criticised by later scholars. Artwork from the 1000-page posthumous collection of Becan's works, titled 'Opera' (1580).
