The carbon black isthen kept in this moist condition mixed with water so as to form athin paste. About 10 c. c. of this paste is added to each liter of waterwhich is to be purified and, after shaking, the mixture is allowed tostand for fifteen to thirty minutes and is then filtered through anordinary filter paper into a clean hard-glass receptacle. Water sotreated is very satisfactory for the growth of plants in solutioncultures.
