An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922) and an illustration of a telephone. Bell was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and engineer who is credited with inventing and patenting the first practical telephone. He also co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885. His research on hearing and speech led him to experiment with hearing devices which eventually culminated in Bell being awarded the first US patent for the telephone in 1876. Bell considered his invention an intrusion and refused to have a telephone in his study.

Bell was an advocate of compulsory sterilisation, and served as chairman or president of several eugenics organisations. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
