Early anaesthesia. Masked nurse using a bottle to drip ether onto a patient's mask during surgery. Ether was discovered in 1275, but was not used as an anaesthetic until 1842, gaining widespread use from 1846. However, ether was not ideal for use as a general anaesthetic, and was mostly replaced by the use of chloroform.
