C ) 168 SYSTEMATIC SYNOPSIS. — PASSEBES — streaks on breast and sides ; maxillary stripes of the same ; wings and tail plain dusky, withslight olivaceous edgings; wing-coverts and iu^M^ quills somewhat margined with brown ;edge of wing bright yellow ; a bright yelloiv spofon lore, and often some vague brownish anddusky markings on side of head 5 bill plumbeous, or dark horn-blue ; feetdark. Length ; extent ; wing ; tail about Recognizable on sight by the brightyellow edge of wing and loral spot, with little varied olive-gray upper parts. Salt marshes ofthe Atlantic and Gulf coast; abundant. North to Massachusetts; breeds throughout its range,and resident in the south, but screened from casual observation by the nature of its haunts andhabits. Nest in a tussock of grass just out of water; eggs X , grayish-white, thicklyand pretty evenly marked. A. m. nigrescens. (Lat. nigrescens, growing black.) Florida Sea-side Finch.
